Fusion Extensions: What you need to know

Denielle Kennett

By Cara Scott, owner of Salon Amore

What are Fusion Extensions, and why do you recommend them the most?

These are 2 of the MOST COMMON questions I am asked when it comes to extensions.

In 2005 I received my certification in Fusion Extension treatment. I went to Orlando, took a class (that felt like an eternity), and left with the knowledge (a little paper to prove it) that would forever let me completely transform hair from short to long, thin to thick, and so on.

Yes, since my training nearly 15 years ago, many new brands, new technology and new techniques have come into play and I pride myself on staying current in this industry. But in my personal opinion, talking hair extensions, nothing tops Fusions.

What are Fusion Extensions?

This is one of the "original" forms of hair extensions, the OG of the industry if you will. It's tried and true, and if installed and cared for properly, there is very little maintenance one needs to go through. They are placed, strand-by-strand, and bonded with keratin, which is then fused to your hair with heat, creating a natural and free flowing effect designed to mimic the movement of your own, natural hair.

Celebrities have been flaunting Fusion Extensions for decades, because lets face it, it is all in the hair! It is a timely process and I always include a precision haircut and style to every install I do, so make sure you always book out plenty of time with your stylist. There is a special art to cutting hair extensions in order to make them appear 100% authentic, which requires perfect blending.

Here are some additional questions my clients ask:

Can you wash extensions? Why yes, yes you can!

Can you blow dry them? Yes, you can, you can curl, flat iron, braid, etc! Treat them as you would your normal hair.

How much do they cost? Depending on your hair thickness and length and what style you want to achieve, and what brand/style of hair is being used, partials start at $550, and a Full head can be $900+.

How long do they last? They typically last 4 months, but some people have had them in as long as 6+ months. It really depends on the quality of care you use and type of lifestyle (active versus non active, for example.)
